Favorite Thing You’ve Learned in College: To learn from, experience, and enjoy my classes rather than just going for the grade

Favorite Vacation (locale): Blacksfork—my family’s summer camping spot in the high Unitas.

One Vacation Necessity: My journal

Favorite Vacation (story): I was taking a road trip with my sister and parents through Italy, Austria, and Switzerland. I was nursing a head cold and trying to get over jet lag at the same time—so I was sleeping in the back seat. My dad stopped the car and announced that we were in Luxembourg. I opened the door, put one foot on the road, pulled it back in, and went back to sleep. By the time I woke up we were in Switzerland. But at least I can say I have put one foot in Luxembourg.

I never leave home without: My planner

Favorite Quote: “Welcome the task that makes you go beyond yourself, and you will grow.”

Major: English

Hometown and State: Phoenixville, Pennsylvania

Career Goals: To be an editor for a horse, travel, or food magazine.

Favorite Book: No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy

Favorite Part of Editing: My favorite part about editing is the learning.

Least Favorite Part of Editing: Proofreading

Favorite Thing You’ve Learned in College: The most valuable thing I learned in college was how to work and how to do work that you can really be proud of. I don’t do anything anymore that I don’t give my 110%.

One Vacation Necessity: A great camera.

Favorite Vacation (story): My favorite vacation wasn’t actually a vacation, it was a study abroad in London. During the two months I was there, I completely fell in love with that city and I’m convinced it’s the most incredible city in the world. I obviously haven’t been to all the cities in the world, but I’ve been to a lot of ones that are considered to be really great cities, and London surpasses them all. I love the history, the architecture, the literature, the markets, the shopping, and, of course, the tube. I spent my last night in London on Millennium Bridge, a footbridge that spans the Thames between St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Tate Modern. This is my favorite spot in London because St. Paul’s looks so beautiful and peaceful all lit up against the river, even if it is the infamously dirty Thames!

I never leave home without: A bag, of course! As you can read in my editor’s note on page 7 of the magazine, I love bags and I never leave the house without the appropriate bag, which might change several times a day.

Favorite Quote: “One does not like to generalize about so many people all at once but you may be sure that men know nothing about their hearts.” – Jane Austen, Emma

I have never: Had a chance to swim with dolphins. I’m sort of terrified of the ocean, but I’m dying to swim with a dolphin. I’m determined to achieve this goal in the next few years.

Dream Travel Location: Somewhere in the UK on the back of a horse. In order for anything to be my dream vacation, it has to include horses. The UK has a rich history with horses and English riding, so for me that would be the ultimate riding experience and the dream location.

Favorite Vacation (locale): Lake Powell

Favorite Vacation (story): My favorite vacation was when I went to Egypt as part of my study abroad. I fell off a camel, drove a horse-drawn carriage through the streets of Luxor, and was one of the few students who didn’t get food poisoning.

I let go and screamed the whole way down and laughed the whole way up while bouncing around until they finally pulled me in. Greatest moment ever.

I never leave home without: Sadly, my phone.

Hometown and State: Springville, Utah

Career Goals: I would like to be a full-time copyeditor for either a magazine or a publishing company. I also think that it would be fun to try teaching English at some point in my life.

Least Favorite Part of Editing: Reading boring pieces, like college research papers.

Favorite Thing You’ve Learned in College: How to work with deadlines

Favorite Vacation (locale): Orlando, Florida

One Vacation Necessity: Swimsuit. No matter where you are going, you can always run into an opportunity for a swim. Don’t be caught without it!

Favorite Vacation (story): I went on a cruise with my sister. We flew to Florida and spent a couple of days on the beach and at theme parks, then embarked on the boat to the Bahamas. It was fabulous to just spend some quality time with my sister and do something that we had never done before.

I never leave home without: Chapstick. I hate when my lips get dry, and there is nothing I can do about it. Different climates and weather can definitely make this worse. I carry chapstick in my purse, my backpack, my glove box, coat pockets, etc.

Major: Chemistry (editing minor)

Hometown and State: Pomona, CA and West Jordan, UT

Career Goals: to edit for a scientific magazine or journal

Favorite Book: #1: Crime and Punishment #2: The Count of Monte Cristo

Favorite Part of Editing: I love the feeling at the end, when I have helped to make the manuscript better than it was before, finding something not so obvious (it’s like a reverse Easter egg hunt because you don’t want there to be problems, but it is rewarding to be able to identify them), and the variety of tasks that fall under the category of editing (writing, designing, and actual editing).

Least Favorite Part of Editing: It is difficult to edit my own writing – it is so much harder to find the problems and to fix them. XP

Favorite Thing You’ve Learned in College: My best moment in college was when I realized that I could figure out something completely new on my own. I think that half of college is learning the basics and the other half is learning how to apply the basics to new situations.

Favorite Vacation (locale): Montana – my best family vacations have been rockhounding trips there.

One Vacation Necessity: Playing cards – they can save you from boredom in unexpected situations.

Favorite Vacation (story): This isn’t my favorite story, but one time I was walking around at the University of Cambridge with my backpack, and I got accosted by ragged man (homeless or something?) who started asking me for money. Even as I was turning him down he still was pretty persistent, but I turned away pretty quick. That’s when I noticed a second ragged man right behind me, and it became obvious that he was friends with the first. I felt like it was a set up to so the second man could steal something from my backpack… I didn’t notice anything missing…

I never leave home without: pants

Name: Marv Gardner, Editor in Chief

Title: Teaching Professor, Department of Linguistics and English Language, Brigham Young University

Hometown and State: Grew up in Duncan, Arizona, and Provo, Utah. I currently reside in Pleasant Grove, Utah

Career: Before becoming a professor at BYU in 2005, I worked for 28 years as a full-time editor and writer for the Ensign and Liahona magazines, both of which are distributed worldwide. For more than half of those years, I was managing editor of the Liahona.

Favorite Part of Editing: Working with interesting people who have something worth saying.

Favorite Travel Experience: In the early 1990s, I traveled to a remote, obscure village in Paraguay. When I stopped at a random dwelling, the first person I happened to meet was a man sitting on a wooden chair under a tree, reading a recent issue of the international magazine I had edited.
